I live in town, can I have a Border Collie?
There is definitely a perception that Border Collies are working dogs and working dogs only- this couldn’t be further from the truth. In recent studies Border Collies are one of the top 4 purchased dogs in Australian and most of them live in metropolitan areas where they are treated with an equal town/home to adventure/exercise lifestyle.
The nature of your dog and their demands are partially genetic, but a great deal of it is environmental and how they are raised. If you raise a puppy to be energetic and always moving or working they’ll expect this everyday. If you teach a puppy the this is their yard, they are rewarded for not escaping, given love, treats, cuddles and they’re a ‘pet’ or member of the family- they’ll thrive on this. That pup is still going to have energy and drive to exercise because you have a routine and you’re including them in your life.
We believe that the best way to ensure your puppy-dog growth matches your lifestyle is simply to ensure that you’re spending time with them, teaching them your boundaries and expectations. There is nothing wrong with a puppy or dog being in a locked yard throughout the day, being realistic, it happens to most dogs because most owners work. What is not acceptable is having that same dog locked up all day, locked up all night and given no affection or attention. There is a difference between the two, but a vast majority of pets are left unattended throughout the day while their parents/owners are working; its life, lets be real here.
